Building a Liveable Ontario Roadmap for Municipalities
April 23, 2026
In October 2026 residents will elect new Councils. Until election day, there will be many discussions about what the new Councils should do. Candidates will knock on doors and pitch residents with their ideas. Residents will be talking to each about who to vote for and why.
The Alliance wants to inform these discussions. So we’ve created the Building a Liveable Ontario Roadmap for Municipalities. It includes 10 actions municipal governments can take to help build liveable communities.
Build Liveable Neighbourhoods
Support the construction of housing within existing neighbourhoods and oppose municipal boundary expansions for new developments.
Prioritize the construction of missing middle housing and midrise housing that contain multiple units and a diversity of unit sizes (eg. bachelor to 4 bedrooms).
Ensure all new developments include upgrades to and/or the creation of the social and physical infrastructure communities need.
Prioritize transportation options that encourage walking, cycling and public transit use.
Safeguard food and water security
Preserve farmland and adjacent buffer lands in and around your municipality that are key to a sustainable food supply for Ontarians.
Preserve and protect natural areas, including watersheds, in and around your municipality that are key to a healthy water supply and accessing free ecological services that drive our economy and livelihood.
Put forward a Council resolution that supports the protection and expansion of the Greenbelt since most of these lands are vital to protecting water and food security for Ontarians.
Make Housing Affordable
Prioritize the construction of affordable housing operated by non-profit housing providers.
Put forward a Council resolution requesting the provincial and federal governments set aside at no cost provincial and federal lands for non-profit housing providers working with private builders to create permanent non-market housing.
Put forward a Council resolution to join the “From the Ground” initiative where municipalities offer free land to non-profit housing providers ready to create non-market affordable housing.
